Foot Facts: A Cure for Ingrown Toenails?
December 2000
An ingrown toenail is usually caused by the shape of the nail. There is no way that we can change the shape of the nail so it does not grow that way anymore, but fortunately there are other options.
A very common procedure is called a Phenol and Alcohol. In this procedure the side of the offending nail is removed back to the matrix, or the root of the nail. Phenol is then applied to the matrix area to kill the remaining nail cells. After this procedure is performed, the side of the nail should not grow back.
The remaining nail is slightly narrower, but is still cosmetically appealing to the patient. This seems to be a very effective option for most patients.
