Foot Facts: Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
September 13, 2000
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a hot topic in the news. This is a painful condition in the hands due to compression of a nerve in the wrist. The foot can be affected similarly with a condition known as Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. It is an entrapment of the Posterior Tibial Nerve as it crosses under the tissue at the level of the ankle. The pain can be confused with other conditions such as heel spurs.
Symptoms may include pain, tingling, numbness and even wasting of foot muscles in severe cases. The symptoms can radiate from the ankle to the toes.
This condition can be diagnosed with a combination of physical examination and sophisticated tests done by a Neurologist. Treatment can be non-surgical, but in some cases surgery may be the only option to avoid permanent nerve damage.
If you have similar symptoms, consult a qualified Podiatrist for evaluation to determine if it is coming from this type of entrapment, or if an area higher in the body (e.g. lower back) is involved.
