Dr. Leon Shturman Leads Quincy Medical Center ACR Accreditation

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Services awarded three-year accreditation

Under the leadership of Dr. Leon Shturman, a member of the Cardiology Team at Granite Medical Group and the Medical Director of the Quincy Medical Center Cardiac MRI program Quincy Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical images if internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. The QMC accreditation includes head, spine, body, MSK, MRA and cardiac MRI.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous improvement.

Quincy Medical Center offers a full range of accredited diagnostic imaging services and it is one of only a few hospitals in the area to offer cardiac MRI. “Cardiac MRI is a state-of-the-art imaging modality that enables us to define cardiac structure, morphology and function with superior resolution compared to an echo,” says Granite Medical Group cardiologist Leon Shturman, MD, who is fellowship trained in cardiac MRI and CT. “Cardiac MRI can help us better identify patients who would benefit from procedures such as angioplasty, and aid in the diagnosis of a host of heart problems, such as cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, pericarditis, cardiac masses and more. The excellent team of Dr. Shturman, the radiologists and technologists at Quincy Medical Center deserve high marks for spearheading this program.”
